Astaxanthin

Can astaxanthin reduce the eye fatigue, dryness, and focusing strain that build during full days of screen work? Personal experiment record, not medical advice, prescribing, sourcing guidance, or an instruction to copy.

Primary question: I am not testing Astaxanthin because I expect better eyesight. I am testing whether it reduces the daily friction of screen work: tired eyes, dryness, focusing strain, and the end-of-day visual fatigue that builds up after long computer sessions.

Research Summary

What it is

Astaxanthin is a red xanthophyll carotenoid found in microalgae and the seafood that accumulates it, including salmon, shrimp, and krill. As a supplement it is usually positioned as a fat-soluble antioxidant, but the useful question is not whether the antioxidant story sounds impressive. The useful question is whether it changes anything I can observe.

Mechanism

The appeal is a cluster of plausible mechanisms: antioxidant and anti-inflammatory signaling, membrane protection, mitochondrial stress handling, and microcirculation effects. For eyes, that maps most directly to screen-related oxidative stress, tear-film stability, ciliary-muscle fatigue, and focusing strain. Those are plausible mechanisms, not proof of a practical benefit.

Eye evidence

The most personally relevant human evidence is around digital eye strain and accommodation. Older studies in visual-display-terminal workers and healthy adults reported improvements in eyestrain, accommodation, or focusing-related measures. A newer randomized trial in screen-heavy children using 4 mg per day for 84 days reported better computer-vision symptom scores and visual fatigue, but did not show meaningful changes in visual acuity, refraction, or near-point accommodation. That keeps the claim narrow: possible eye-comfort support, not better vision.

Dry-eye signal

There is also a dry-eye thread. One study using 12 mg per day in middle-aged and older patients with mild-to-moderate dry eye reported improvements in symptoms and several tear-film or corneal surface markers after about a month. The limitation is important: it was a one-group study without a placebo control, so I treat it as supportive but not decisive.

Skin and recovery

Outside the eye angle, the cleaner human signals are skin and recovery biomarkers. Skin studies point toward moisture and elasticity support more than dramatic wrinkle changes. Exercise reviews suggest possible reductions in muscle-damage markers after training, but the direct performance signal is weaker. I am not expecting Astaxanthin to produce a strength or endurance effect I can clearly feel.

Lipids and inflammation

Meta-analyses suggest possible improvements in triglycerides, HDL, oxidative-stress markers, and inflammatory markers, but certainty is not high. If there is a lipid or inflammation signal for me, I would expect it to show up in routine labs rather than as an obvious day-to-day feeling.

Dose context

The logged dose in my stack is 12 mg per day. That sits inside the range used in some human studies, including dry-eye work, but it is higher than the conservative 8 mg per day level commonly used in some regulatory discussions for adult supplements. I am treating that as a reason to keep the claim personal and measured.

Safety boundary

Short-term human studies generally report good tolerance, but supplement tolerance is not the same thing as a medical indication or guaranteed long-term benefit. Because this is a convenience and resilience experiment rather than a deficiency correction, the bar for keeping it in the routine is a real signal in eye comfort, recovery, skin, or labs.

The Experiment

Protocol

I started this experiment on June 10, 2026. The logged serving is one capsule per day, providing 12 mg of Astaxanthin according to the supplement label. This is listed in the daily large-meal section of the stack.

Hypothesis

Because I work on a computer and screens for full days, the highest-value test is eye comfort. The useful signal would be less end-of-day eye fatigue, less dryness or burning, less focusing lag, fewer screen-related headaches, or better tolerance for long computer sessions.

Secondary signals

I will also pay attention to skin dryness, training soreness, recovery feel, and standard lipid or inflammation markers when labs are available. Those signals are secondary. If eye comfort does not move, the supplement needs a clearer reason to stay.

Decision rule

I would keep Astaxanthin if it earns its place through a clear reduction in screen fatigue, a noticeable dry-eye improvement, a useful skin or recovery signal, or better lab markers. If it becomes just another generic antioxidant with no observable effect, it should come out of the permanent stack.
