What it is
Beetroot is a concentrated food source of inorganic nitrate. After absorption, some nitrate is concentrated into saliva, where oral bacteria reduce it to nitrite. Swallowed nitrite can then be reduced to nitric oxide, especially in lower-oxygen and more acidic tissue. The relevant promise is not that beetroot makes blood carry more oxygen. It is that nitrate-derived nitric oxide may change vascular tone, exercise economy, muscle blood-flow distribution, and contractile function.
Not natural tadalafil
This experiment followed my stopped tadalafil experiment, but the two interventions are not natural and pharmaceutical versions of the same thing. Dietary nitrate sits upstream and supplies material for nitric-oxide production. Tadalafil and other PDE5 inhibitors sit downstream and slow the breakdown of cGMP after nitric oxide has already triggered the signal. The connection was the practical goal, training blood flow and pump, not pharmacological equivalence.
The dose was legitimate
One 400 mg shot provides about 6.45 mmol of nitrate. That is not a token beet dose: sports guidance commonly places the useful acute range around 6-8 mmol, or roughly 350-500 mg, generally consumed two to three hours before exercise. Independent testing of commercial beet products measured tested lots of the Pro-Elite shot at 6.41 plus or minus 0.60 mmol per serving, close to the label claim. That does not assay my exact lot, but it makes gross underdosing a weaker explanation than it would be with an unstandardized beet powder.
What the performance evidence supports
A 2025 umbrella review re-analyzed 180 primary studies involving 2,672 unique participants. The positive signals were task-specific: time to exhaustion, total distance, muscular endurance, peak power, and time to peak power. The same analysis found no average benefit for self-paced time trials, maximal strength, VO2max, graded exercise tests, total work, or mean power. Benefits in time-to-exhaustion tests were more apparent at a minimum of 6 mmol per day and after more than three days, but most of the underlying reviews were rated low or critically low quality. The honest summary is a small, inconsistent edge in selected tests, not a general performance boost a person should expect to feel.
Strength versus muscular endurance
Resistance-exercise studies illustrate the difference. A small meta-analysis in resistance-trained men found improvements in repetitions to failure, mean power, and mean velocity, but not peak power or peak velocity. The broader umbrella analysis found muscular endurance improved while maximal strength did not. A newer dose-response crossover study then tested approximately 6, 12, and 24 mmol in trained men: blood nitrate and nitrite rose, but squat, bench press, jump, power, and velocity performance did not improve at any dose. This makes a one-day deadlift PR a poor nitrate readout. It is a good training result, not evidence of causation.
Pump and visible vascularity
Subjective pump and visible veins are not established nitrate outcomes in the research. Trials usually measure arterial diameter, blood flow, vascular conductance, muscle oxygenation, or exercise performance instead. In one placebo-controlled trial, 800 mg of nitrate raised plasma nitrate 19.5-fold and nitrite 1.6-fold and lowered arterial stiffness, yet did not change brachial-artery diameter or forearm blood flow at rest or during graded handgrip exercise. Other small studies using higher doses have found increased exercising-muscle flow. The mixed result is the point: biological exposure and vasodilation do not guarantee a visible or felt bodybuilding pump.
Blood pressure can move without a felt effect
One especially relevant crossover study used the same 400 mg nitrate dose for 15 consecutive days in 14 healthy men. Plasma nitrate and nitrite increased, while resting and exercising blood pressure and vascular resistance fell compared with nitrate-depleted beetroot juice. That shows how the pathway can produce quiet physiological changes without a stimulant-like sensation. It does not mean everyone will show the same response. My daily home readings did not show a blood-pressure change I could distinguish from baseline.
Why responses vary
Conversion depends partly on nitrate-reducing oral bacteria. Controlled studies show that antibacterial mouthwash can suppress the expected rise in plasma nitrite. Baseline diet, oral-microbiome composition, training status, exercise type, dose timing, and the size of the effect relative to normal day-to-day training noise can all influence whether a response is detectable. These are plausible modifiers, not rescue explanations I can prove after the fact.
Safety boundary
Concentrated beetroot juice can cause gastrointestinal discomfort and harmless pink or red urine and stool, and nitrate can lower blood pressure in some people. Dietary inorganic nitrate is also not the same exposure as prescription organic nitrate drugs. This page does not establish the safety of combining a concentrated nitrate supplement with PDE5 inhibitors or other blood-pressure agents. It documents one completed personal experiment, not a protocol or combination recommendation.
